Oriental/Asiatic Lillies

Oriental / Asiatic Lillies
There are few flowers that outshine Oriental lillies. They come up on their own every year even bigger and better. They grow on separate stalks from 3' to 5' tall, and come in many types and colors. My favorite is the Stargazer, The blooms get as big as dinner plates and the color is magnificent. I plant them here and there all through my flower beds. For a stunning effect. I have them surrounding my hummingbird feeder. They love them too.
The fragrance is superb, and attracts butterflies as well as hummingbirds. What more could you ask for? For ease to grow and there scent and beauty, I rate them at the very top of my list of favorites.

Lillies ( I love them all)

Daylillies

There are so many different types of lillies and they are all very pretty. Among them are dallillies, which grow in clumps and have long narrow leaves that make a very large plant, They are very good plants to use as fill ins. and they spread nicely. They can be used as a way to prevent soil erroision to, because their roots spread out and hold onto the soil. They come in many colors and flower sizes and are inexpensive. The majority of speices are also very easy to care for. All in all, THEY'RE GREAT!!! ( tomorow another lily? )

Hummingbird feeders

You can never have enough hummingbird feeders, Why? Well hummingbirds are very stingy. They chase others away from the feeder that they claim to be their own. They have to eat continuously because they are so tiny and they burn a lot of energy very rapidly. I have seen them share at mating time, only to keep their mate away after mating period is over. That would really tick me off. Most birds are mates for life. I have a pair of hummingbirds that are regulars to all of my feeders, The male particularly likes the one right in the middle of my front flowerbed. He thinks it is his. He even hides in the trees and waits for another hummingbird to dare and infringe on his territory, so he can chase it away. He is very small and dark, it looks like he is wearing a tux, His mate is quite a bit larger and she is more colorful with a red throat and green body with a fanned tail. She is more friendly than he and even circles me and checks me out especially when the feeder is empty.

birdfeeder

King of the finches
this is a birdfeeder for finches. This young male goldfinch thinks it's all his!
The Goldfinch is the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington.Goldfinches move around a lot. It is reported that 25 to 100 different Goldfinches can visit a feeder in one day. It is a very busy place in my garden.
